LaaSer Critical Communications Chosen to Join Inaugural Techstars Atlanta Class
ATLANTA, Aug. 1, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Companies from six continents and 69 countries applied to be part of the inaugural Techstars Atlanta program this year, but only 10 were chosen. Among those 10 is LaaSer Critical Communications (LaaSer™), the company behind the patented LaaSer™ emergency services location platform that immediately pinpoints mobile 911 callers and routes emergency calls to the appropriate jurisdiction.
Techstars, the global startup accelerator aimed at helping entrepreneurs grow their businesses, announced the Techstars Atlanta Class of 2016 last week. The first-ever Atlanta class starts its three-month Techstars incubation period today with over 90 mentors from Techstars corporate partner Cox Enterprises, the Atlanta business community, and the Techstars alumnae network.
LaaSer will spend the next 90 days working and being mentored in the Techstars Atlanta state-of-the-art business and meeting space; Techstars will arrange opportunities for the company to meet investors and access capital, marketing and business development assistance.
Techstars Atlanta kicked off on Thursday with the Techstars Atlanta Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, where members of the Atlantastartup community joined Cox Enterprises and Techstars Atlanta staff to celebrate the program's launch. The Techstars Atlanta 2016 program will culminate with Demo Day on November 1, 2016 at The Tabernacle in Atlanta, coinciding with Venture Atlanta 2016.
"We are excited and honored to be among the ten companies chosen for the inaugural Techstars Atlanta program," stated Jon Harmer, LaaSer Chief Marketing Officer. "Techstars presents an incredible opportunity for LaaSer to grow its business and potentially save many more lives."
LaaSer was designed to solve a critical problem: Outdated emergency telecommunications technology cannot accurately determine the location of mobile callers and frequently routes calls made from mobile phones to the wrong jurisdiction, causing delays in locating victims and costing emergency responders precious time. When 76% of 911 calls are made from mobile phones, that's a problem experts estimate results in thousands of lives lost unnecessarily every year.
LaaSer's patented technology eliminates the problem. The platform automatically determines the caller's location at the moment a 911 call is made from a mobile phone and then uses that location information to route the call to the proper public safety answering point, or PSAP, putting the caller in touch with the 911 operator that can actually dispatch the help needed. LaaSer taps into the phone's existing technology--including GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC/RFID, compass, accelerometer, and barometer--to transmit precise location information to the 911 operator in real time.
The technology is cutting-edge and already solving a life-threatening real-world problem, but Harmer believes LaaSer was chosen for Techstars Atlanta 2016 as much for its strong team, communications focus, and Atlanta location as for its product.
"Techstars has stated they look for the right combination of team, market, progress, and idea," Harmer explained. "Techstars Atlanta made it clear that on top of those guidelines, they were specifically looking for emerging technologies, companies with strong ties to the Atlanta tech community, and companies in industries in which Cox Enterprises does business--including communications. LaaSer fit the bill in each of those areas. We look forward to being a part of the Techstars family."
