Mobile Bar Code Trends

If there was ever any doubt that smartphone use of scanning mobile bar codes (QR codes) is exploding, a new survey by ScanLife validates this burgeoning trend.

The company recently released its Mobile Bar Code Trend Report for the first quarter of 2012, which tracks key trends and provides vital insights regarding the impact on the market from both smartphone users and mobile marketers.

Perhaps the most dramatic finding is 5 million users, a nearly 200 percent increase from this time a year ago, and 1 million more users over the last quarter of 2011. (See chart below).

Total mobile bar code scans continue to climb to 13 million scans processed through ScanLife in Q1 2012, a 157% increase from the same time period a year ago. (See chart below).

Some of the demographic highlights in the report include:

• Most users are male, but female users have increased 8 percent from a year ago.

• The majority of mobile scanners (35 percent) are in the 25-34 age bracket; not a surprising continuing trend.

• iOS and Android operating systems deliver 93 percent of the total traffic internationally.

Within QR code marketing campaigns, there was an increase in mobile bar code use by restaurant chains and as part of in-store marketing. Additionally, millions of smartphones are being used during the shopping experience, according to the report. The most popular marketing campaigns are delivering video, app downloads, and product details.

ScanLife also looked at content strategies. Video content was rated highest for detailed branding or product information, and CRM programs such as sweepstakes also made the list, indicating that QR codes can be used to drive customer loyalty from multiple media.

Interestingly, mobile bar codes are penetrating different parts of the world. ScanLife processes scans from over 130 countries every day, with Portugal joining the list of the top 10. In order, the countries using ScanLife for processing mobile bar codes are the United States, Spain, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Mexico, Portugal, Brazil, and the UK.
