RFID Rugged Mobile Computers Simplify Inventory Management for Retailers
Two products are now on the market to help retailers and supply chain managers simplify inventory management, while enhancing the shopping experience for their customers.
The Honeywell Optimus™ 5900 RFID mobile computer was released in early May 2012. This is the company’s first mobile device that combines radio frequency identification (RFID) and automated data collection. Implementing the Optimus 5900 RFID mobile computer offers retailers significant cost savings through quicker, more accurate inventory counts.
This solution is of particular interest to soft goods retailers whose bottom line relies on inventory cycle counts. The Optimus 5900 RFID rugged computer allows for faster, more frequent counts with fewer workers, saving labor costs and efforts while providing greater inventory visibility and accuracy for retailers. The system is also useful in warehousing and distribution operations, allowing faster and more accurate tracking of products from delivery to POS.
The Optimus 5900 is rugged yet lightweight, and comes complete with 3.5-inch screen, touch panel and keyboard. Set-up is out-of-the-box simple, with terminal and all required peripherals, including a charging and communication cradle, charging adapter, USB cable and hand strap included.
Motorola also offers a line of RFID rugged computers with features targeted to retailers. Maintaining and replenishing inventory, automating tasks to reduce labor costs and minimizing shrink are all elements Item-level RFID applications can help retailers address this age-old problem while improving inventory and replenishment processes, increasing visibility into shrink, and automating tasks to reduce labor costs.
Motorola’s MC3090-Z RFID readers offer retailers a gun-style scanner that’s comfortable and easy to use for extended periods of time. The MC3090Z features an orientation insensitive antenna that delivers reliability while eliminating the need for precise alignment of the reader with the tag. According to the company, this allows the reader to accurately and rapidly capture RFID tags on even the most challenging items, such as a pile of clothing in a retail store.
Additionally, the company states, the MC3090-Z rugged mobile computer is the only RFID reader that features pinpoint technology that guides workers to the specific location of an item.
RFID tells you what is or is not in stock and where it can be found in the store. In many cases this shortens the time spent searching for merchandise or eliminates trips to the stock room.
