Septuagenarian Barcode Heist!
A 71 year old man is set for arraignment this coming Friday in Iowa for what appears to be a barcode felony. He and another gentlemen committed fraud multiple times over a period of several years. The two men brought barcodes taken from Play-Doh containers to Walmart, and used them to cover the barcodes of higher-priced items. They used the self checkout lane so no one would be the wiser. Unfortunately for them, they ended up being caught with almost $700 of unpaid merchandise. Self-checkout lanes have always been vulnerable to thievery, and although some companies are designing programs to help eliminate this, it is obviously still an issue, even at major retailers. Because of the value of the theft, it is considered a class-B felony, which can carry a prison sentence of up to 25 years. For more information on the story, click here.
