New ‘Risk Game’ is a Fun Simulated Educational Workshop on Supply Chain Risk Management

The Risk Game is an effective, interactive workshop for supply chain practitioners or students to collaborate, encounter real-life risk scenarios and—more importantly—learn how to meticulously manage risk

Resilinc, the leading provider of supply chain visibility data-as-a-service and advanced risk analytics solutions, has developed a role-playing game that can turn a typical conference, workshop or classroom into a lively learning and team-building experience.

“The Risk Game is an effective, interactive workshop for supply chain practitioners or students to collaborate, encounter real-life risk scenarios and—more importantly—learn how to meticulously manage risk,” said Bill Hurles, Supply Chain Faculty at Wayne State University and former executive director supply chain management at General Motors, after hosting the game at the GM/WSU Annual Supply Chain Competition in October. “It fosters an innovative and hands on learning environment, and students really enjoyed the experience.”

“It was two and half hours of practical learning that was both engaging and fun,” affirmed Charles F. Piazza, director of Saybrook University’s Department of Leadership and Management whose students played The Risk Game at their most prestigious event, the Entrepreneurial Leadership in Silicon Valley Certificate Program in September 2018. “Participants had to strategize, take risks and innovate.”

Resilinc created its Risk Game to help people learn about supply chain risk management in a fun and stimulating way. Since October 2017, Resilinc’s team has run this workshop at almost a dozen events, covering over 700 participants and receiving high marks for both the fun component, and for the hands-on learning experience.

At the September 2018 Automotive Industry Action Group/South Carolina Automotive Council Supply Chain and Quality Conference, The Risk Game proved to be an energizing and popular kick-off activity, according to James T. Liegghio, AIAG’s program manager for supply chain products and services. “It provided insights about supply chain risk management through various scenarios designed to mimic real-world events,” he said. “It was also a great way to help break silos.”

To play the game, between 30 and 60 participants are assigned to teams, which are companies in a multi-tier supply chain. Over several rounds, participants who play different roles in their team, must adapt to changing demands of their customers and cope with the kinds of disruptive scenarios that impact supply chains in the real world.

“The Risk Game workshop is two-and-half hours of hands on simulation, competition and fun,” said Sandeep Ramachandran, Resilinc’s primary architect of the Risk Game. “The game models the real world and demonstrates how data and incentives drive decisions and in turn affects financial performance. Participants must act quickly and collaborate to effectively compete and meet customer demands. We love watching complete strangers laughing, talking and collaborating within minutes of starting the workshop.”

Each team scores based on their ability to serve customers on time as well as their ability to control costs and profits within a dynamic and uncertain supply chain landscape.
