Digimarc and Barcodes Enhance The Angry Birds Movie

BEAVERTON, Ore., May 18, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Rovio, the creator of the internationally-acclaimed Angry Birds entertainment franchise, has collaborated with Digimarc Corp. (NASDAQ: DMRC) to deliver a new enhanced in-theater experience as part of the highly-anticipated motion picture "The Angry Birds Movie," opening on May 20 in the United States.

Rovio incorporated Digimarc Barcode for audio into the end credits of "The Angry Birds Movie", allowing for a unique way to activate new capabilities via audio. When an audience member takes out their smartphone and opens the "Angry Birds Action!" game app during the end credits, the app seamlessly identifies the enabled audio and the moviegoer is immediately granted access to a new area of the game along with an exclusive movie clip.

"Digimarc made it possible for us to create an innovative second-screen experience that will excite and resonate with our audience," said Sami Ronkainen, creative director, digital & physical at Rovio. "We want to interact with our fans in innovative ways, and by implementing Digimarc Barcode into our latest game, we're converging both the digital and physical works to offer an exclusive form of entertainment."

The Digimarc Discover® Mobile SDK was integrated into the "Angry Birds Action!" game app to provide the ability to instantly recognize enabled audio. Designed for fast and reliable detection by the Digimarc Discover Mobile SDK, even in high ambient noise environments such as a movie theater, Digimarc Barcodes for audio allows for virtually any recorded sound to be enhanced and serve as a trigger for activating a wide range of new digital services and features. Rovio is among the first to leverage Digimarc's versatile technology in the mobile entertainment market.

The Digimarc Discover Mobile SDK, a key part of the company's Intuitive Computing Platform (ICP), allows application developers to rapidly deploy a best-in-class comprehensive discovery platform that scans 1D barcodes, 2D/QR codes and Digimarc Barcodes. Digimarc Barcodes for audio as well as imperceptible barcodes for print and packaging create new efficiencies and opportunities for businesses and brands alike.

"'Angry Birds' is the most downloaded game of all time and has an enormous fan base," said Larry Logan, chief marketing officer at Digimarc. "By leveraging the audio detection capabilities of the Digimarc Discover Mobile SDK, Rovio is able to build on that adoration and offer enthusiasts of the game new multimodal experiences to connect like never before. Digimarc is empowering brands to create meaningful and memorable points of engagement, positively impacting both the brand itself and its consumers."

Rovio is the latest addition to Digimarc's growing roster of clients in the media and entertainment markets, including Shazam for 'Visual Shazam' activations, SourceAudio for production music monitoring and the Portland Trail Blazers NBA franchise for interactive fan experiences.
