Need for Accuracy in Data Capture and Storage for the Industrial Barcode Scanner Market

LONDON--()--Technavio analysts forecast the global industrial barcode scanner market to grow at a CAGR of over 6% during the forecast period, according to their latest report.

The research study covers the present scenario and growth prospects of the global industrial barcode scanner market for 2016-2020. The report also lists 2D imagers, linear imagers and laser scanners as the three main technology segments among industrial barcode scanners.

Technavio hardware and semiconductor analysts highlight the following three factors that are contributing to the growth of the global industrial barcode scanner market:

  • Increased adoption of 2D barcodes
  • Need for accuracy in data capture and storage
  • Emerging demand for handheld and rugged industrial barcode scanners

Increased adoption of 2D barcodes

In the industrial sector, 2D barcodes such as QR codes, Data Matrix barcodes, and PDF417 barcodes are increasingly being used. QR codes are the most popular among the three. PDF417 barcodes are primarily used in the transportation and logistics, retail, and healthcare industries. Data Matrix barcodes are used to mark small items and are used by the retail and warehousing industries.

QR codes are also called 2D codes because they hold information both vertically and horizontally, making it easy for barcode readers to get encrypted information at both the angles. A QR code can carry almost 10 times more information than a 1D barcode. It also gives the freedom to include a logo or picture in order to identify the product or object in a better way. Moreover, 2D barcodes are more durable, versatile, and less prone to errors compared to 1D barcodes. Data from 2D barcodes can still be accessed even if around 33% of the data become damaged. Due to these advantages, QR codes are preferred over traditional 1D barcodes. The introduction of 2D barcodes has increased the demand for 2D industrial barcode scanners, which will drive the market growth during the forecast period.

Need for accuracy in data capture and storage

The importance of accurate data capture and storage is increasing in the global industrial barcode scanner market. A single wrong entry can lead to loss of revenues or tarnish the brand image of an organization. Being more reliable and accurate, industrial barcode scanners are replacing manual data entry systems, thereby eliminating human error.

According to Sunil Kumar Singh, a lead analyst at Technavio for embedded systems research, “Barcodes are error-free because each barcode is unique and is encoded with the required data. Many manufacturing units are adopting the barcoding technology and barcode scanners as they save a lot of time and cost. Inventory management involves keeping track of items, which is the potential application for industrial barcode scanners.” Barcoding systems ensure that purchase orders are linked to the amount of stock that has to be replenished. In addition, they help avoid theft from inventory. Even demand trends can be analyzed by observing the items that are leaving inventory fast. All these factors help in the adoption of barcodes.

Emerging demand for handheld and rugged industrial barcode scanners

Barcode scanners were earlier used in retail outlets and warehouses to store data related to products being sold or stored. In 2015, barcode scanners were being increasingly adopted for industrial applications to enable quick and accurate data capture and data entry.

Handheld industrial barcode scanners are portable. They can be either connected to a laptop or connected via Bluetooth (in the case of wireless barcode scanners). Instead of carrying bulky objects to the barcode reader, the barcode reader can be carried to the objects. Handheld industrial barcode scanners are easy to use and highly flexible because of which the position of the scanner can be modified as per the placement of the object that has to be scanned. “As handheld barcode scanners are portable, they are preferred in the industrial sector,” says Sunil.

Rugged mobile computers are increasingly being used in the industrial sector to scan the tags present on the products. These computers are used to capture real-time data and enhance productivity. Multipurpose mobile computers offer scanning services and are integrated with systems such as RFID, Bluetooth, voice recognition, biometric, and global positioning systems. For instance, Honeywell's Dolphin 7800hc rugged mobile computer offers multipurpose mobile computing, data collection, and communication that can be used in different healthcare applications such as specimen collection, inventory management, and bedside care. These features have increased the demand for multipurpose mobile computers in the global market, which, in turn, will contribute to the growth of the market during the forecast period.
