AIM North America Honors U.S. Senator Portman
Cranberry Township, PA |October 7, 2015– AIM North America (AIM NA), the industry association and authority on barcode, RFID, RTLS, the Internet of Things, NFC and mobile computing, announced that U. S. Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) has been named the recipient of the 2015 Automatic Identification Technology (AIT) Award.
The AIT Award, created in 2013, is presented annually to an individual, committee, group, or organization from the government sector that has championed the successful use of automatic identification technology within the local, state, or national government. It is sponsored by the AIT Alliance, a committee of AIM North America.
In selecting Senator Portman for this year’s honor, the AIT Alliance cited his significant commitment to promoting the use of automatic identification technologies in the Department of Defense (DoD).
He co-authored bipartisan legislation with Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) and the Senate Armed Services Committee that required the Department of Defense to create a detailed strategy on improving asset tracking and in-transit visibility, along with identifying plans for all military departments to implement the strategy. This legislation passed and was signed into law as part of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2014. Additionally, Senator Portman’s office has been instrumental in coordinating high-level Congressional briefings with senior Department of Defense officials on automatic identification technology (AIT) compliance.
"AIM North America is fortunate to have many advocates, and Senator Portman’s work with the AIT Alliance truly exemplifies a unique level of dedication,” said Mary Lou Bosco, Chief Operating Officer of AIM NA. "His openness to collaboration through education and promoting the value automatic identification technologies can play in the government shows his concern for not only his Ohio constituents, but Americans across the country. We are pleased to showcase his efforts with this award.”
Senator Portman was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2010. Before joining the Senate, he held several other positions -- an associate counsel for President George H.W. Bush, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, the 14th United States Trade Representative and the 35th Director of the Office of Management and Budget. Currently he is a member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, the chief oversight committee of the U.S. Senate, serving as the Chairman of the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations.
