Scanbuy Applauds President Obama For Signing The National GMO Disclosure Bill Into Law Today

Scanbuy, Inc[1]., the global leader in mobile engagement solutions among consumers, brands and retailers, announced its support for the National GMO Disclosure Bill which was overwhelmingly passed by Congress and signed into law by President Obama today[2]. Sponsored by Senators Debbie Stabenow and Pat Roberts, leaders for the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry, the bipartisan legislation is designed to give consumers clear and consistent information about the products they use, including the presence of genetically engineered ingredients.

“The signing of the bill clears the way to the transparency revolution, mandating the provision of more information to better inform consumers,” said Chai Outmezguine, Chief Executive Officer at Scanbuy. “It specifically ensures that the American public will get more information about whether the food they eat contains genetically engineered ingredients.”

To meet the future federal GMO disclosure mandates, Scanbuy strongly recommends SmartLabel[3]™, a transparency initiative that links consumers to product facts, ingredients, allergens, advisories and more. Introduced by the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) and Food Marketing Institute (FMI) SmartLabel™ is a method to facilitate a transparent and comprehensive labeling process.

Scanbuy believes SmartLabel™ gives consumers instant access to more information than could ever be disclosed on a product label. SmartLabel™ is accessible through a wide variety of methods, from scanning popular QR Codes, to visiting websites and conducting on-line searches or simply calling a phone number.

“Including QR Codes on product packages allows brands to instantly show that they are committed to sharing product information, and gives them the opportunity to engage in the aisle with the consumer,” said Maryann Moschides, Chief Marketing Officer at Scanbuy. “The beauty of using QR Codes is that they are ubiquitous, used by large and small brands alike for many years, and scanned by millions of consumers every day. Brands, therefore, don’t need to teach consumers how to scan a QR Code—only to look for products with SmartLabel™ QR Codes.”

As a leading supplier of SmartLabel™, Scanbuy technology supports the first SmartLabel™ QR Code-enabled products available to consumers today—helping committed manufacturers deliver the transparency promise to their consumers. Hershey’s, the first company to embrace and roll out SmartLabel, reiterated its support of the National GMO Disclosure Bill. “This is an important milestone towards more transparency,” said Deb Arcoleo, Director, Product Transparency. “Consumers want access to more information and we believe they deserve to have it. SmartLabel™ is the best transparency tool available to today and will play a key role in the implementation of this landmark legislation.”
