The report states the strategic planning assumption that by 2017, all leading operational DBMSs will offer multiple data models, relational and NoSQL, in a single DBMS platform. It also cites that by 2017, the "NoSQL" label will cease to distinguish DBMSs, which will result in it falling out of use.

MemSQL received top marks for innovation, rich functionality, and ease of programming and implementation. The database is deployed across industries such as financial services, manufacturing, e-commerce, and adtech, driving business value for customers by processing and analyzing data in real time. MemSQL achieves these results by offering multiple models including relational, document, key-value, and geospatial data; real-time streaming with integrated Apache Spark; and a user-friendly web-based Ops interface for easy deployments.

"Gartner is defining a strong architectural foundation for enterprises to meet today's operational database needs, specifically a flexible architecture with multiple data models," said Eric Frenkiel, CEO and co-founder, MemSQL. "Our approach of delivering an in-memory, distributed database with full transactional SQL provides these models to our customers, and we are pleased to be recognized as the leading relational database in the Visionaries Quadrant for Operational Database Management Systems."
