YouTube bar code/scanner videos for Summer 2011 - Part 2
Cedemo has announced the release of the Video Game Barcode Scanner, designed to help you make choices about video game purchases. The app allows you to scan the games barcode, bringing up a page of detailed information including photos, trailers, ratings, and descriptions. The demo video is in French as the software is overseas for now, but the potential for use with media outside of games is amazing.
The funny looking bar codes that are widely being used now are called a QR code, which stands for Quick Response code. These new mobile barcodes are big in Japan and slowly catching on in here in America. Here is a great CBS News report about the cool world of QR code advertising.
You can get a Bar Code/QR Reader for just about any phone with a camera and there are several apps available for iPhones and Android devices. The overall top three apps being used on phones are as follows...

There are a couple of main ones that are used on Android and Apple devices. First there is the app from the ZXing team that lets you scan both bar codes and QR codes. All you have to do is aim your phone’s camera at the code. This was recently reviewed on App Judgment by Revision 3.

Next up is a bar code scanner by RedLaser. The state-of-the-art barcode scanning technology was created specifically to deal with non-autofocus cameras and continues to evolve with innovative mobile visual capabilities.

Finally we have the big hitters on the block, both Google and Microsoft. Google Shopper is an Android app from Google that can scan book covers, DVD covers, and bar codes. You can scan the books to quickly get more info. This app supports voice search also.

Microsoft Tag lets you scan their proprietary tags known as High Capacity Color Barcode. These information rich tags can hold much more data than the 1D barcodes and QR codes.
