Mobile Barcodes Save Money and Increase Quality at Lennox

Before implementing the mobile bar code system, LII conducted quality control of their manufacturing process by using auditors, check lists, and visual inspections--a system that was error-prone, costly, and time consuming. In order to streamline the process, LII decided that a mobile bar code system could be used to verify part numbers, part suppliers, and serial numbers. Linear bar codes were dismissed, since the larger labels would cost more and pose problems such as being scanned out of sequence or requiring advanced knowledge of which bar code fields would be on which parts.

2D Mobile Bar Codes-
An Efficient Solution.

The 2D mobile bar codes offered a more compact and efficient solution. LII settled on the 2D Matrix bar codes, which are small enough to fit on most existing labels, and avoid the need for field numbers and sequences to be known before they can be scanned. Honeywell’s 4800i scanner was chosen to scan the mobile bar codes, due to its industrial-grade durability, and its scanning abilities to meet LII’s manufacturing requirements.

Taking less than 7/10s of a second for the Honeywell 4800i to scan, decode, and verify the 2D mobile bar codes, the new mobile bar code solution has saved production time spent verifying components and has reduced the risk of incorrect components being installed. Also, the data that the Honeywell 4800i captures from the mobile bar codes can be saved and stored for later reference, also offering opportunities for improved product reliability.
