BarCode Art Makes Art Lovers Line Up

Artists have been painting portraits of inanimate objects, cultural themes and iconic figures for centuries. So, what makes them look so different when Artist Scott Blake plasters their known faces on a once blank canvass? If you look closely, you will notice that he paints in code - bar code, that is. Since the end of his schooling at Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia, he has painted over 30 portraits and collages, received countless awards and has been seen at numerous exhibitions displaying his work.

Scott Blake’s barcode art is like none other. For most of his art, he will take real UPC barcodes from products that relate to a person, such as a CD by Elvis Presley, and then illustrates that person by using the barcode. Sometimes, Blake will even use cover images from CDs and DVDs instead of the actual bar codes.

This talented and inspired artist doesn’t just illustrate persons of interest, though. He has been distorting bar codes since 2001 just for the fun of the craft, and has created a variety of symbols that all scan including shapes and nature objects. In Blake’s online store, you can purchase bar codes that are both wearable and useable including t-shirts, tattoos and coffee mugs. Creating a bar code and turning it into art is another option, as well.
